Holiday Pet Hazards: What Veterinarians Want You to Know

Keep the season joyful and safe for your dogs and cats!  Here are a few tips and things to lookout for during the holidays.  Animals are curious and will find their way into unopened gifts, new interesting things appearing inside the house that may even smell or taste good.  At Alli'i Animal we always say you know your pets best, if you are concerned then we are concerned!  Please do no hesitate to call when you feel that your pet may have ingested something they shouldn't!

Holiday Decorations

1. Christmas Trees

  • Tipping risk: Secure trees to prevent them from falling if pets jump or climb.

  • Water danger: Tree water may contain fertilizer or bacteria—use a covered reservoir.

  • Needles: Pine needles can irritate paws or be harmful if swallowed.

2. Ornaments

  • Breakables: Glass ornaments can cause cuts or GI injuries. Keep them higher on the tree.

  • Shiny temptation: Cats love dangling decorations—use shatter-proof ornaments whenever possible.

3. Tinsel, Ribbon & Strings

  • A major life-threatening hazard for cats. Linear foreign bodies can cause intestinal blockages.

  • Avoid tinsel entirely; keep ribbon scraps and wrapping materials out of reach.

4. Lights & Electrical Cords

  • Risk of chewing, burns, or electrocution.

  • Use cord protectors and unplug lights when pets are unsupervised.

Plants & Greenery

Toxic or Irritating Holiday Plants

  • Poinsettias: Mildly irritating; can cause drooling or stomach upset.

  • Holly & Mistletoe: More harmful—can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or cardiovascular problems.

  • Lilies: Extremely toxic to cats (even small exposures can cause kidney failure).

Vet tip: Choose pet-safe alternatives or keep plants entirely out of reach.

Holiday Foods & Treats

1. Dangerous Foods

  • Chocolate: Toxic to dogs and cats—dark chocolate is especially dangerous.

  • Xylitol: Found in sugar-free baked goods, gum, and some peanut butters; can be deadly.

  • Fatty foods: Turkey skin, gravy, and rich dishes can trigger pancreatitis.

  • Bones: Can splinter and cause obstructions or perforations.

  • Grapes/Raisins: Very toxic to dogs—cause kidney failure.

  • Alcohol: Even small amounts can be harmful.

2. Safe Treat Practices

  • Give only pet-approved treats.

  • Be mindful when guests may leave food, drinks, or candy where pets can reach.

Gifts & Wrapping Supplies

  • Keep string, tape, scented candles, and small toys away from pets.

  • Dispose of wrapping materials immediately after opening gifts.

Guests, Travel & Stress

  • Visitors can be overwhelming for pets.

  • Provide:

    • A quiet, safe space or crate

    • Extra reassurance for anxious pets

    • Reminders to guests to keep doors closed to prevent escapes

  • Update microchip info and ensure pets wear ID tags during busy gatherings.

  • Ali'i Tip - write us an email and designate your caregiver to make decisions or be point of contact when you are away

    • Include dates of travel from start to end.

    • Details if they may make medical decisions while you are unreachable.  We will always try your first!

When to Call a Veterinarian

Seek immediate veterinary care if your pet shows:

  • Vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite

  • Lethargy or weakness

  • Tremors, seizures

  • Drooling, pawing at the mouth

  • Swelling or difficulty breathing

You can also call ASPCA Poison Control or Pet Poison Helpline for urgent toxic exposure concerns.  We always suggest to our Ali'i clients to call poison control on your way to seeking urgent care.  This is key to finding out vital information about the toxity and how we will take next steps to treat your pet.

Have a safe and joyful season!  Hoping you and your pets are living your best life!
