He is new to Ali'i and he is very thorough!! On the phone, he took the time to talk to me about the various options we had for care. My poor cat was suffering from multiple ailments at once, so he made sure to thoroughly address them with me one-by-one. He answered my questions and gave me lots of options. Through this conversation, we were able to develop a care plan for her so that she can get back to health.
Mahalo Dr. Gupta!! I am so glad that you are at Ali'i and that you took the time to come up with options to find balance and prioritize care and cost. Read Less
I was a little nervous even though this was just a visit to establish new veterinary care because my cats have only ever been to Kailua Animal Clinic for the entirety of their 7-8 years of life. But the moment that the veterinary technician came out for an initial assessment, any anxiety that I had immediately dissipated. The vet tech was not only personable but went over general health questions related to my cats. I was actually quite surprised that she had even asked about my two boys' recurring issues with UTIs and vomiting and how they were doing now. It was a minor detail but showed that the veterinarian and affiliated staff took the time to go over our medical records and follow-up. Once the initial assessment was done, I helped the vet tech bring in our cats to the lobby and went back to the car to wait. My husband and I waited about thirty minutes, possibly shorter, before Dr. Maureen Rankin came outside to talk to us about our cats, which was another nice surprise since I just assumed Dr. Rankin would give us a call. Like the vet tech who assisted us (whose name I unfortunately cannot recall), Dr. Rankin herself was very personable and you could tell from the way she talked to us that she was passionate about her job. She not only commented on how cute our cats were but were happy to tell us that based on their ages and medical histories, all three cats were healthy, which is always a relief to hear. Dr. Rankin again checked with us to make sure that we did not have any questions or concerns that we wanted to discuss and then told us that our cats would be brought our shortly before heading back in. After a few minutes, our three cats were carried out in their carriers by a staff member including our initial vet tech, another vet tech (?), and Dera, one of their concierge staff who had assisted me with scheduling the appointment and getting set-up as clients.
I did not expect to meet Dera in person just because I can only imagine how busy the staff are at the Kailua location (I know their Kaka'ako location can get quite busy as well) but it was nice to put a face to a name because from the very get-go when she called to follow-up on scheduling an initial appointment, Dera was not only patient with me as I asked questions and wanted to make sure I covered all my bases, but was also forthcoming about information related to appointments, costs, etc. If there was an award for best concierge/front desk staff member, Dera would certainly win it on all accounts because she is just that phenomenal and truly the real MVP of the Ali'i Animal Hospital Kailua location.
Overall, if you are looking for a good veterinary practice on the Windward side, I would highly recommend Ali'i Animal Hospital. As Ali'i Animal Hospital expands their business, it is easy to see why they have been so successful over the years because the customer service and the quality of services provided by their veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and concierge staff is outstanding. With each different interaction I had with the Ali'i Animal Hospital staff, I could tell just how much each of them cared about what they did and the business they were representing. Even my cats who are usually panicked beyond belief whenever we have to visit the vet were surprisingly calm on the way home. The surprise cherry on top? The technicians had even clipped my cats' nails before returning our cats to us and did not charge us a cent. It is always the little details that truly make a difference for clients and their pets and I am excited to see what the future holds for Ali'i Animal Hospital. Read Less

Read MoreThis review is LONG OVERDUE, but Alii is truly the best pet hospital out there. I commute from the West Side just to bring my baby Momo to the best doctors.
We started off with all of our initial appointments with Dr. Yasunaga, when baby girl Momo was only a few weeks old. Dr. Yasunaga is kind, knowledgeable and extremely patient - not with just the dogs, but their pawrents too! I remember asking her a TON of questions since this was my first time taking care of a dog of my own (as in, not my parents'). She reassured me with the kindest voice and took me through every step of what was expected with the growth of my puppy and upcoming appointments.
My breed, the West Highland White Terrier, or westies, for short, are prone to sensitive skin and sensitive tummies. Dr. Yasunaga was kind enough to recommend all of the foods and preferred brands to take care of our baby best.
One scary day, we found Momo next to a box of chewed up match sticks. We called Alii immediately and their expert staff was able to assess the situation over the phone and determine whether or not to come in. After their recommendation, we rushed her to their office and were seen by ER doctor, Dr. Pressler. She was also extremely reassuring and patient with us, even though we felt terrible and scared for Momo. Dr. Pressler informed us of our different options such as X-ray, or surgery, depending on the severity of the situation. Luckily, inducing vomiting was enough and no invasive services were needed. This was something I really appreciated, as every process and explanation was clear, and I was not charged for something that was unnecessary; above all, Momo didn't have to go through any procedure that wasn't needed. All of my questions were reassured and we were supported 100% of the way.
We love coming to Alii and I can't imagine taking her anywhere else. Not only are the receiving staff friendly and helpful, but the vet techs are skilled, informative, and their physicians are beyond talented. I couldn't thank Alii more for all they've done for us and our baby girl Momo. Read Less
The receptionist and technicians were very helpful and so kind to us, walking us through everything we needed to know. however it was Dr. Takiguchi who really blew me away with her call and running me through every single thing that i needed to know going in with this. she knew i was worried and anxious but she got me calm and we even shared a few laughs on the call. while i didn't get to meet her face to face because of covid i'm very happy with the service! We'll be coming in a few weeks to get our other dogs transferred to Alii because this is forever the only vet for us. thank you! Read Less

Read MoreI just moved my dog 1.5 year-old Labrador from CA to HI and after the first week of swimming in the ocean and taking in all the flora & fauna, he started developing tiny bumps that turned into welts.
At first, I saw 1-2 scabby areas but chalked it up to possible tick bites as I know how those things thrive in hot and humid climates.. Then, tiny little firm bumps started appearing around his neck and dorsal area, above his shoulder blades. He didn't appear to be itching or scratching but this prompted me to find a good veterinarian ASAP. I typed in my zip code and Ali'i Hospital & Resort was one of the first to appear. I read through all the positive reviews which definitely outnumbered the bad and decided to give them a call. The staff was very friendly and tried to squeeze me in as soon as possible. The did process a $31 booking fee to hold the appointment which would be applied towards the exam fee itself. We ended up calling them back to see if they could squeeze us in sooner for an urgent care visit which they managed to work out for an additional $31, bringing the total for an emergency pet visit to $62.
Because of COVID restrictions right now, we aren't able to go into the clinic with our pets. Rather, you drive or walk-up to your appointment, then call the clinic upon arrival for someone to meet you outside and receive your pet.
The nurse who received my dog, Luke, outside was so genuinely receptive and took all the info about my dog's condition down accordingly.
The veterinarian who ended up seeing Luke was Dr. Yasunaga. Even though I did not get to see her in person and only spoke with her over the phone, I could tell that she is a sweet, good-natured, and caring person. She was kind enough to call me with an update as well as to go over procedures and treatment plans. Furthermore, she was considerate and provided me with estimated costs along the way.
After all was said and done, Luke was diagnosed with an unusual case of Bacterial folliculitis due to hotspots and he was prescribed steroids and antibiotics(which was the bulk of the cost for the meds). They also sent us home with one free dose of NexGard for Luke to try out.
Out-the-door, we paid about $300 total which, I believe, is pretty fair considering they squeezed him in last-minute and appeared to provide him with the best care available on OahuWe've got Luke started on his prescribed meds and are keeping an eye on his progress but are pretty confident he will be well on his way to recovery. When I got back to Ali'i, I asked for an update and was told that Buttfurs was being seen now. There were a few other pet parents that came to pick up their pets. I was standing off to the right side of the entrance. The resort director, Matt Malta saw me and checked to see if I've been helped. I told him yes and that I was waiting on my cat. He asked if I wanted a chair to sit on while I waited or if I wanted water. I said yes to the chair. He brought over one. Thank you Matt! A few of the vet assistants saw me waiting when they helped other pet owners and checked up on me as well. Excellent customer service!
Dr. Judy Yasunaga called me to let me know what she found after examining Mr. Buttfurs. She asked if I was waiting outside, I said yes. So she personally came out to explain everything to me. She was very kind, knowledgeable and patient. I had a lot of questions and was super worried about Buttfurs. She answered all of them expertly! 🙂 I had recently adopted a kitten who's foster kitten-mates were diagnosed with Giardiasis and Coccidiosis (parasites). So I was worried Buttfurs may have it too. I also brought in a poop/fecal sample to be tested for any parasites. Ali'i offers cat fecal sample analysis through outside testing. (IDEXX Fecal Dx Antigen Tests) I was told I'd get the results in 1 to 2 days. She prescribed him some antibiotics and a sedative for the next time I take him to the vet. Buttfurs tends to get very anxious and becomes combative. She also recommended a bland diet for the time being and different ways to mix in the medicines with his food. He has gotten more rotund which I've been slightly worried about too. I was worried about megacolon or anything internally so she suggested that we could do a more thorough examination after sedation and imaging but it would be a bit costly. I was able to get a quote of the cost for that procedure. I'm happy that she provided me with information and explored different treatment options with me. Not once did I feel pressured into choosing one or the other. She is a very genuine and caring veterinarian. Thank you Dr. Yasunaga!
When I got home Mr. Buttfurs was very angry with me, lol. I tried to give him the bland food with the medicine mixed in and he would not eat it. He may have sniffed it out. I called Ali'i for suggestions on how to feed it to him. The receptionist checked with vet assistants and gave me some pointers. Thank you to all the staff members for their helpful suggestions! Sadly, Mr. Buttfurs also didn't fall for anything I tried. So I put the medicine directly into a syringe and squeezed that into his mouth. He was very very angry with me... Was not having it at all. Hissing, snarling, clawing. Lol. I wasted a lot of medicine and food attempting all this. I called Ali'i again, they let me know that their vet techs could give him the medication if I brought him in for a charge. I tried my best with the DIY syringe method. Earned a lot of back leg bunny kicking war scars from this ordeal... Lol.
Almost a week after I still had not heard back with the fecal testing results so I emailed Ali'i at pets@aliianimal.com and got a response within a few days from Nadia. The results showed as negative for hookworm, roundworm, whipworm, ova (eggs) and parasites. Which was great news. Though not sure what the exact cause of his bloody poops were. With some time and a different diet Mr. Buttfurs got better.
I had a hard time trying to give him the antibiotic medication and really appreciated all the helpful suggestions from staff members about how to give him the meds. I also really thank this clinic for accommodating me. By giving me a time slot to have him seen that day because I was really worried. Thanks again to everyone at Ali'i Animal Hospital and Resort for taking care of us! Mr. Buttfurs shares his mahaloz too ;D Read Less

After frantically calling around for immediate emergency care, Ali'i Animal Hospital was the only service willing to step up and take her in right away.
All the other vets that claim to provide 'emergency care' and laughingly have high ratings on Yelp including our regular vet, denied accepting her, very disappointing.
Needless to say, we now have a great new vet for Nadia's daughter at Ali'i Animal Hospital and Resort!

We were initially interested in Ali'i for their vet services as we wanted to find a vet closer to home. We live in town and Ali'i is very conveniently located off Ward Ave. Easy to find. Switching over was easy and they reviewed our pup's records right away to make sure she was up to date on all her shots.
We immediately made an appointment for a grooming. They only take grooming appointments on Saturdays and Tuesdays (I think) because there's only 1 groomer, so we had to wait a few weeks to get in. However, the wait was worth it! Our pup came home looking and smelling fabulous! We had previously taken our pup to either PetCo or PetSmart for grooming - which were ok, but the groomers were always different and she sometimes came back with an uneven cut.
Haven't used their doggy care care service yet, but we love the option to watch the doggys on their web cam to see what they're doing during the day!
Everyone we've interacted with at Ali'i (via phone, email or in person) has been peasant, welcoming and professional. Highly recommend all their services.
Current COVID protocols don't allow you to enter. Instead, they'll meet you and your pup outside. Read Less

Making a new patient appointment was very easy. I called and immediately got an appointment. I was sent a fillable new patient form document to fill out before the apartment and that made thing easy. The staff were very friendly towards me and meow. They also explained things in detail such as how to find the location and answered all of my questions.
The facility is not hard to find, there's a beautiful mural on the side of the building that I have included a picture of. Once there, it is posted on the door to call a number to let them know you've arrived. Nadia assisted me and she had a great personality throughout. She also reassured meow as he's never been here before. I was quoted about 30 minutes for the appointment. I decided to walk over to the Longs to browse while I waited.
Dr. Joanna Cook called me to notify me of the findings and addressed any concerns I had personally. I'm very appreciative of the time she spent to answer all of my questions sincerely. Not once did I feel rushed. She offered different options for treatment and I never once felt pressured into choosing which one. She even offered to email and print a hard copy of the clinical notes for me. I accepted.
After the phone call, I walked back to the facility and called again to pick up meow. Outside I saw Dr. Cook, she greeted me and again went over her findings. I thanked her. Then Nadia helped me with my bill and brought meow back out to me. When I got home, meow was fine and the same way as when I took him in.
I really enjoyed the quality service and the ease to get to this location. The staff are also very genuine and qualified. They also offer a variety of medical services along with pet boarding, daycare and grooming. Check out their website for more information, it's very thorough! Read Less

My dog King has skin cancer. When he goes in the sun he develops huge masses that bleed and they burst and eventually got badly infected. The skin cells died and his skin started to just fall apart. He has already had 4 surgeries from other vets to remove them so far. This was my first time going to Alii Animal hospital.
King had surgery to remove multiple cancerous masses on his ventral abdomen and groin area. Dr. cook had her work cut out for her, and it was a very high risk surgery, as my dog is already 10 years old. He had stopped eating and couldn't walk by the time he got the surgery, he was on his literal death bed.
The surgery took 3x longer than expected and even though they close at 5pm, the surgery / recovery didn't finish until 8pm.
King is the only baby I've ever had, I would've died if he didn't survive.
